This $25/£21 dongle fits in the Mac mini’s HDMI port, and emulates the presence of a display. I bought this CompuLab HDMI Plug with Remote Desktop Access, or 4K Display Emulator (the name is different on the two Amazon sites, and Amazon UK).
There’s a way around this, however, and it’s pretty simple. If the Mac mini runs headless, the GPU, not detecting any display, doesn’t activate. I set up the server, but, since I’m running it headless – with no attached display – I could only view it in one resolution using OS X’s screen sharing feature.
